In general farmers’ plots were quite small. When a farmer died his plot would be divided between his sons. As a result of this plots would become smaller and smaller. Landowners with small farms farmed the land themselves, with the help of slaves. If the harvest was not a good one, the poorer farmers could not survive. They might then become slaves.
